Since January, the count of beneficiary owner (BO) accounts with zero balance surged, reflecting the somber sentiment prevailing in the country’s stock market. As per Central Depository Bangladesh Limited records, 67,617 BO owners cleared their accounts since the year commenced. The figure rose from 296,901 on January 1 to 365,772 by April 25, indicating a concerning trend. Conversely, the number of BO accounts holding share balances decreased from 1,404,289 to 1,346,289 during the same period. The necessity of a BO account, facilitated by depository participants like stockbrokers or merchant banks, remains pivotal for trading shares on the Dhaka and Chittagong stock exchanges. Market analysts attribute this trend to persistent share price declines, which have induced investor anxiety and led to substantial losses, exacerbating apprehensions about the capital market’s stability.
