IMF Loan 2nd Tranche Depends on Policy Action Implementation

Economic Tag: Debt

Bangladesh has taken policy actions in line with IMF recommendations to secure the second installment of a $4.7 billion loan. The government’s finance committee will meet to review progress and discuss measures undertaken till July 2023 to attain the remaining installments. However, challenges persist in realizing the benefits of these measures, obtaining the second IMF installment, and stabilizing the macroeconomic situation. Factors like forex volatility, fuel shortages, and overall economic instability pose threats to economic stability, delaying loan disbursement. The country’s gross reserves fell to $23.56 billion from $29.92 billion due to a new calculation method. To achieve the targeted revenue, experts emphasize stabilizing imports and supply chains.
