The Bangladesh Economic Zones Authority (Beza) faces financial strain with a Tk17,000 crore loan burden in its quest to establish 100 economic zones. Of the planned zones, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Shilpa Nagar in Mirsarai, the largest, struggles to attract investors, hampering Beza’s revenue generation. With Tk4,250 crore from the World Bank and Tk2,128 crore from JICA, Beza confronts loan challenges and a recent interest rate hike from 1% to 6%. The agency’s income is insufficient, earning around Tk100 crore in FY23, while it pleads for loan rescheduling. Beza considers proposals like treating its activities as government grants and low-interest loans for projects, awaiting Finance Division review. Despite Beza’s initial goals of job creation and export growth, only 11 out of 97 approved economic zones are operational.
