In the financial year 2023-24, Bangladesh’s foreign debt servicing surged by 25.73% to $3.35 billion, driven by rising global interest rates and an expanded foreign loan portfolio. Interest payments alone soared 44% to $1.35 billion, while principal repayments increased to $2 billion.
The rising cost of debt is attributed to high reference rates in advanced economies and Bangladesh’s upcoming graduation from least developed country status, reducing access to concessional loans. Additionally, currency depreciation has increased the value of debt in local currency terms. The finance ministry expects interest payments to continue rising, reaching 2.6% of the national budget by FY27. Despite the increase, the government aims to manage debt within tolerable limits, supported by diversified funding sources and foreign exchange reserves. The total foreign debt stood at $68 billion as of March 2024, with significant loan disbursements from global lenders.
