Interest payments on Bangladesh’s foreign loans surged by 162% year-on-year in the first nine months of FY24, reaching Tk 11,602 crore, driven by the start of debt servicing on major projects like the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant. This compares to Tk 4,435 crore in the same period of FY23, according to the finance ministry’s “Quarterly Debt Bulletin.” The rise is attributed to the beginning of interest payments following the disbursement of loans, with further increases expected as Bangladesh’s external debt burden grows. Additionally, domestic loan interest payments also rose by 7%, contributing to a total outlay of Tk 71,191 crore. The report warns that as Bangladesh graduates from LDC status in 2026, access to concessional loans will diminish, further increasing debt servicing costs. The ministry also noted that the devaluation of the taka has exacerbated the situation by inflating the local currency value of external debt.
