Bangladesh is set to meet the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) foreign exchange reserve condition in June, thanks to a record $4.8 billion in budget assistance from global creditors. This marks the first time since the approval of the IMF’s $4.7 billion loan programme in January 2023. The assistance includes $2.76 billion in budget support and $2.04 billion in project loans, which have bolstered the Bangladesh Bank’s forex reserves.
The IMF’s loan programme requires maintaining a specific level of net international reserves (NIR). Despite missing targets in 2022 and early 2023, Bangladesh will achieve the June target of $14.79 billion NIR, largely due to recent budget support and increased remittance earnings ahead of Eid-ul-Azha. As of June, the NIR stands above $15 billion, while gross forex reserves are at $21.99 billion.
