In a bid to address the fiscal shortfall, the Bangladesh government is seeking $800 million in budget-support credit from Japan. This request comes on top of loans already taken from the IMF and other financial institutions like the World Bank, ADB, AFD, and AIIB. Despite this urgent appeal, Japan, Bangladesh’s largest bilateral development partner, has not yet confirmed the assistance. With the fiscal year ending in a month, securing these funds is critical for the economy. The 2023-24 national budget, valued at Tk 7.61 trillion, features a Tk 2.61-trillion deficit, representing 5.2% of GDP. The government plans to finance this gap through Tk 1.55 trillion in internal borrowing, including from the banking system, and Tk 1.27 trillion from external sources.
