Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) recently expressed concerns about the Green Climate Fund (GCF), stating that its profit-oriented approach is increasing the debt burden on vulnerable countries like Bangladesh. In a recent press conference, TIB highlighted several issues with the GCF’s funding distribution.
TIB pointed out that among the 154 countries recognized as “fundable” by the GCF, 25 countries, including several in the Asia-Pacific region, have not received any funding for projects. Similarly, out of 96 “particularly vulnerable” countries, eight have not received any funding.
The organization criticized the GCF for providing more loans than grants to affected countries like Bangladesh, burdening them with debt. This approach is seen as contrary to the fund’s mandate to provide grants for climate adaptation and mitigation projects.
