Private sector short-term foreign loans in Bangladesh experienced a marginal decrease in March, settling at $11.04 billion compared to $11.07 billion in February. This downward trend, observed since December when loans were at $11.79 billion, is attributed to businesses prioritizing loan repayments over new borrowings. Hence, challenges in securing new foreign loans, are now likely due to existing outstanding amounts and diminished foreign institution confidence, were noted by bankers. Despite remaining stagnant at $11 billion for the past three months, concerns persist regarding Bangladesh’s ability to manage its external debt, which surpassed $100 billion by December 2023.
