Public debt increased by 20% to Tk 16.2 trillion in the past fiscal year (2022-23), up from Tk 13.5 trillion in the previous fiscal year. The rise in external borrowings during the year contributed to this higher debt level. External debt reached Tk 6.7 trillion, a nearly 36% year-on-year increase. Meanwhile, domestic debt from banking and non-banking sources amounted to Tk 9.44 trillion, up by over 11% annually. As a percentage of GDP, total debts and liabilities accounted for 36.34% in FY 2023, up from 33.79% in FY 2022. Interest payments on debts reached Tk 925.38 billion, compared to Tk 757.59 billion in the previous fiscal year. Despite these increases, the debt-to-GDP ratio remains below the IMF-set threshold of 55%. The rising debt levels pose challenges for government spending on development projects and other expenditures.
